At Kalyan Hospital, we treat several patients who are diagnosed with different spinal conditions. With the right treatment approach and timely treatment, around 90% of the patients can be treated with non-operative treatment which includes spinal injection, medication management, physical therapy, or a combination of these treatments.

If these treatments can work, then what are the reasons which lead to the need for spine surgery. Given below are the top reasons that you need to get a surgical intervention to treat the problem of neck or back pain.

  • Reduce the pressure off the nerves
Some of the conditions like spinal stenosis or disc herniation can compress the nerves within the spinal column which can lead to numbness, muscle weakness, tingling sensation, and other possible symptoms.
The need for spinal surgery increases in these conditions to avoid the problem permanently. In this case, different surgical procedure is needed which include:
  • ALIF
  • XLIF
  • Laminectomy
  • For stabilizing the unstable spine

An unstable spine means the spinal column is not able to maintain its natural form. The healthy spine will provide support to the entire body along with maintaining the structure and provide protection also. But, the unstable spine will have problems as it cannot hold the muscle, disc, spinal ligaments, and bone which is important for stable functioning. The unstable spine will be due to different conditions: spondylolisthesis, spinal fracture, and extreme disc injury.

The need for surgery increases when the symptoms get worse or progresses that it leads to leg pain or neurological issues from a pinched nerve. The type of surgery which is done includes:

  • ALIF
  • PLIF
  • Lateral Interbody Fusion
  • For aligning the crooked spine

In some cases, the natural curve of the spine is affected which leads to impairments. It includes conditions like kyphosis, scoliosis, and flat-back syndrome. Non-operative treatment is best for treating scoliosis and kyphosis which is done through physical therapy and bracing.

The surgical procedure is needed because the spinal curvature is affected and this helps in realigning it correctly.
