  • Waking up after surgery

After surgery, you will have a tube in the back to drain the fluid from the wound. In the arm, you will have an IV through which pain medicine, antibiotics, and fluids will be delivered. Another tube is known as a catheter which connects to where urine normally leaves the body so that you don’t have to go to the bathroom. Electronic wraps or stocking squeeze the calves so that blood keeps flowing and there is no issue of a blood clot.

  • First 24 hours after surgery

After a few hours in recovery, you need to go to a regular hospital room. You may be given a pain pump so that by pressing the button you get relief from pain. A nurse is going to tell you about breathing exercises with the tool known as a spirometer. This needs to be done daily in the recovery. Your physical and occupational therapists are going to talk to you about exercise and movement.

  • Start of PT

You might need to stay in the hospital for 1 to 3 days or maybe longer depending on your condition. It is important to do proper rest. But the doctor would want you to start moving and along with that physical therapy should begin.

If you have a back brace you need to put it on and you are going to move from the bed to the chair. Eventually, you are going to use a walker. Walking is considered extremely important for lower and upper spinal surgery.

  • Continuing PT at home

Once you get back home, you need to keep doing exercise so that your spine becomes strong. Your doctor is going to tell you how often you need to do it. At the start, it can be for several days a week. The more you walk it makes it easier for your body to heal. Your therapist is going to tell you how to do it correctly.

  • Sitting after the surgery

It can be tempting to plop down in a soft and comfy chair after PT and watch your favourite TV show, but this should not be done. You need to keep a good posture so that your back is straight. Change positions now and then, but make sure that you do not twist the spine. While sitting, you need to move the ankles up and down so that blood keeps moving through the legs. Make sure you get up from the chair after 30 to 45 minutes. You need to go for a short walk and take a quick nap.

  • Sleeping after surgery

Sleeping is an important part of the healing process. A proper sleep position is essential so that your spine is protected. If you sleep on the back then put a pillow under the knees and head. If you get out of the end then do a dog roll. You need to bend the knees, roll to the side, and then push yourself up the arms. Your body will heal if you take daily naps before lunch or dinner.
